Over the past few years Dell has been blurring the lines between mobile workstations and high-performance consumer laptops by stuffing some professional-level hardware into a Dell Precision professional laptop that looks an awful lot like an XPS 15 consumer model.

And this year is no different: along with the new Dell XPS 15, Dell is launching at Computex this year, the company is introducing a new Dell Precision 5540 mobile workstation version.

It’ll be available in early July for $1,339 and up.

On the outside, this laptop may look like an XPS 15. But under the hood the Precision 5540 is available with more processor options, NVIDIA Quadro graphics, and a choice of operating systems including Windows 10 Home or Pro, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, or Red Hat 7.5.

The notebook measures 14.1″ x 9.3″ x 0.7″ and has a starting weight of about 3.9 pounds for a model with a non-touch display, a solid state drive, and a 56 Wh battery, but it’s also available with hard drives, a 97 Wh battery, and a touchscreen — all of which will increase the weight a bit.

Each model has a Thunderbolt 3 port, an HDMI 2.0 port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports, a headphone jack, an SD card reader, and optional support for a fingerprint reader in the power button.

Here’s a run-down of some of the options:

  1. I own this laptop I9 with 64GBs ram but very poor performance. Heating issue which dell was not able to solve. Once overheated performance is extremely poor. On battery to turn on the machine you will have to keep power butter pressed. Which agains dell says is issue but they don’t have solution.

    1. Your brain is only 4 lbs and it is ok…but, maybe your is “mobile”! :)))
