As expected, Amazon is launching its most affordable tablet to date. The new Amazon Fire is a 7 inch tablet with an IPS display and a $50 price tag.

Want to save even more money? Amazon is offering a buy-5-get-1-free deal, which means you can pay about $41.67 per tablet when you buy a half dozen.

The Amazon Fire tablet is available for pre-order, and ships starting September 30th.

So what kind of hardware do you get for $50? Well, the Amazon Fire doesn’t have a high-resolution display or stereo speakers. But it does have an IPS screen with wide viewing angles, front and rear cameras, and up to 7 hours of battery life.

It’s also one of Amazon’s first tablets to support a microSD card slot for removable storage.

Here’s an overview of the specs:

  • 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel IPS display
  • 1.3 GHz quad-core processor
  • Fire OS 5 (based on Android 5.1)
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of storage (plus a microSD card reader)
  • 802.11b/g/n WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • 2MP rear camera and VGA front-facing camera
  • Mono speaker

The tablet measures 7.5″ x 4.5″ x 0.4″ and weighs about 11 ounces and it supports Amazon’s Mayday Screen Sharing service, allowing customer to contact Amazon for support have a representative walk you through the process of resolving your issue.

  2. Is it actually a Kindle Fire, or is it a stock Chinese android tablet with a logo and custom OS image?

    1. What do you think a Kindle Fire is? What do you think pretty much -all- tablets are? They are reference designs with perhaps, at the higher end, a few tweaks. The Kindle Fire is just lockdown and branding. Personally I’d pay an extra $10 to buy one unlocked, $15 if it were also preloaded with a stock Android. Yes, for $65 you can get generic unlocked tablets but they will sell so many of these that there would a robust third party modding scene.

    This price is pretty low that it may open up for a brand-name tablet, although it will not have Play store.

  4. I like how they included an micro SD slot. Also, this is problay the same IPS display we’ve been seeing in the low end Chinese tablets – Not great, but not terrible. Does anyone know the SoC being used in this device? MediaTek? I’m more interested to see the GPU being used… I assume Mali?

    1. All of the four new models are using MediaTek, the $50 model gets a 1.3GHz processor, down from 1.5GHz in the Fire HD 6, 8GB of storage, microSD card slot, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and running the latest Fire 5.0 that’s based on Android 5.1…

      The specific hardware is a MediaTek Quad Core MT8127 (Cortex A7 – ARMv7) with ARM Mali-450 MP4 (Quad Core), and the device will only be configured with 1GB of RAM… 0.2 may be reserved…

      While, it’s one of the few that offers IPS screen in the $50 price range and the 1024×600 resolution on a 6.7″ screen comes out to just over 177 ppi, which is over the 149 ppi you’d get with a 1280×800 resolution screen on a 10.1″ screen… So, yeah, not terrible but may have issues while web browsing…

        1. Wish I had the time, I used to write a little for this site and I’m still listed among the contributors, for back when we were doing more UMPC and Netbook hardware news/reviews, but I help out by answering questions and clearing up misconceptions in the comments…

  5. I am an Amazon Prime member and have not been using Amazon’s 30 day, “Kindle Owners’ Lending Library” because I don’t own a kindle. Amazon has also started allowing video downloads to kindle devices. I am seriously considering buying one of these and am only hesitating because I wish someone would buy me one for X-mas.

    1. They might, the $50 model is also being offered as part of a six pack for those wishing to get multiple units to share…

    1. Yup, there’s a kid friendly, padded, version of the $50 tablet as well… Higher price, though…

    2. Especially with 128gb microSDXC support. These will be absolutely fine for playing DVD-resolution video. As soon as someone makes a headrest-friendly case for these, they will replace my kids’ aging Archos 70 250gb tablets.

      Heck, they’d probably fit decently enough in my existing Archos cases.

    Though I have to think of myself the point of buying a tablet because I can use my phablet for almost everything an android tablet will do.
    Hence my nook hd+ gathers dust.
    All I use is my oneplus one and MacBook pro

  10. Yes that resolution is bad, but love the fact that they put an IPS at this price point. One word: phenomenal (this is less than the price of an Apple Ipad mini smart case) – wait til next year’s version for the better resolution. I expect to see these as stocking stuffers.
