ViewSonic has been producing Android tablets with 10.1 inch and 7 inch displays for the past few years. Now the company is entering iPad territory with a new model sporting a 9.7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel IPS display.
The ViewSonic ViewPad 97a will go on sale in China later this month. The tablet has a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 1GB of RAM, an HDMI port, and support for 1080p HD video playback. It supports the Google Android Market, but will ship with Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread instead of the newer Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.
ViewSonic will offer a 3G model as well as a WiFi-only version of the tablet. There’s no word on pricing or availability outside of China.
