There’s no shortage of 2-in-1 Windows tablets with Intel Atom Bay Trail processors. But the Kurio Smart still manages to stand out, because it’s one of the first devices in this category aimed at kids (and parents).
The tablet features an 8.9 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display, an Intel Atom Z3735G processor, a detachable keyboard dock, and it comes with Windows 8.1 and a free 1-year subscription to Office 365.
The Kurio Smart is available from Toys R Us for $200.
The tablet has 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a micro HDMI port, a micro USB port, a headset jack, a 2MP rear camera, 0.3MP front camera, stereo speakers, and a 4,900 mAh battery. It supports WiFi and Bluetooth and features a microSD card slot for removable storage.
As for kid-and-family-friendly features, the tablet seems to have a pastel color scheme, but it doesn’t appear to have a particularly rugged design. The main thing that helps set it apart from more grown up tablets is the software: it comes with a number of apps, games, videos, eBooks, and other educational content.
The tablet’s also a bit on the small side: most Windows 2-in-1 tablets on the market have 10 inch or larger displays.
Kurio says the tablet also includes parental controls, but that’s true of most recent Windows computers, since Microsoft’s Family Safety features are built into the operating system.
