Motorola is running an anniversary sale today… not the anniversary of Motorola or its phones, but the 45th anniversary of the first mobile phone call, which took place on April 3rd, 1973.
Anyway, whatever the reason, today the company is offering deep discounts on its phones. You can pick up a Moto X4 with dual rear cameras, a Snapdragon 630 processor, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage for $300.
The Moto G5 Plus with dual rear cameras and a Snapdragon 625 processor may be an even better deal with a 4GB/64GB model going for just $250. There’s also a cheaper 3GB/32GB model, and the single-camera Moto G5 Plus is also on sale for $150 and up if you don’t need portrait mode photos.

Motorola has some facts wrong. 1973 wasn’t the first mobile phone call. It was the first “hand held” mobile phone call.
Mobile phones existed back in the 1940s, but they were mostly restricted to existing inside automobiles.
That doesn’t seem like that compelling of a price on the X4, particularly given the new models about to come out. You can regularly pick up the Amazon Prime model of that for $20 less and sometimes $50 less.
The Motorola sale is all about clearing out inventory before the upcoming 2018 model year phones that are about to be announced, but without having to clue in unknowing customers about the new model year phones they should probably just wait 30-40 days to get.
All phones will be “obsolete” until the 5G versions come out, and even
when the 5Gs do emerge, the 5G “standard” may yet evolve so the first
gen 5Geres may be obsoleted. The 5G phone versions are supposed to come
out in 2019 (US carriers will be upgrading their networks to 5G starting
2018, but won’t offer 5G service until 2019). As so many things about
5G are still up in the air (use case aka raison d’etre is one of them, but
V2V or vehicle-to-vehicle communications among self-driving vehicles
could be a compelling use, although V2V is still in its infancy) 5G is
supposed to offer a plateau so your 5G phone that complies with
“stable” 5G standards should last a few years, or until they think of
something to follow on.
I really doubt that is relevant to most people’s smartphone purchase decisions when 4G is often as fast as many people’s home connections. Not that you need 4k video on a smartphone, but 4G is probably fast enough for that in most areas. I view 5G as more where these mobile companies make the jump to providing home ISP services.
Your comment might be more applicable to someone looking at a flagship device, but even then I don’t see the need.
