CyanogenMod hits 10 million users before shipping first phone

The Oppo N1 smartphone with CyanogenMod software will be the first device to ship with this custom version of Android preloaded when it goes on sale December 24th, 2013. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t already a lot of people running CyanogenMod — this weekend, the popular custom ROM crawled past the 10 million user mark.

That means millions of people have downloaded and installed the software on their own phones and tablets.

CyanogenMod’s statistics might actually be a bit on the low side, since it only counts users who have left CM Stats enabled on their devices and phones or tablets that have checked in with the CyanogenMod servers in the last 90 days.

Users are running CyanogenMod on a number of devices, including Samsung, HTC, and Google Nexus phones and tablets. You can find a break-down at stats.cyanogenmod.org.

It’ll be interesting to see if there’s an uptick in those numbers when the Oppo N1 with CyanogenMod goes on sale. It’s a device that’s probably only going to appeal to a smalle niche: It’s an unlocked device from a Chinese company that will sell for $599 and up. It has a 5.9 inch display, making it unusually large for a smartphone. But it has some top-tier specs including 2GB of RAM, up to 32GB of storage, a 13MP camera that can twist to face the front or back, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor.

If all goes according to plan though, the Oppo N1 will be the first device to ship with CyaonogenMod, but not the last. The team has raised millions of dollars of funding to further develop its software, and is seeking partnerships with device makers.

For now, you can check out the first promo video showing off some of the features of the Oppo N1 with CyanogenMod, including Privacy Guard, advanced settings (including CPU speed controls), and the ability to set custom actions for the N1’s remote control button.

The software has come a long way since it was one independent developer’s project to tweak the heck out of Google’s open source mobile operating system in his free time.
