The new build of Windows 10 for phones (with the Spartan web browser and a crop of new apps) may be grabbing the spotlight today. But Microsoft is also working on an upcoming update of the Windows 10 preview for desktop computers… and, if leaked images are accurate, one of the most notable new features is support for a dark theme.
In addition to changing the colors of the operating systems theme, you’ll be able to adjust transparency and other settings to customize the look of the operating system.
Here’s a roundup of tech news from around the web. You can keep up on the latest news by following Liliputing on Twitter, Google+ and Facebook.
- Windows 10 build 10056 screenshots reveal updated UI
Microsoft has been pushing out updates pretty frequently, so you might be able to get your hands on the new build in a matter of days. [WinBeta] - Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 now available
Like Linux Mint, but don’t like the fact that it’s based on Ubuntu? There’s another option… based on Debian. The latest version is available with a choice of MATE or Cinnamon desktop environments. [Linux Mint] - Sprint announces unlimited free international roaming for Latin America, Europe, Japan
The International Value Roaming service offers 2G data speeds in select countries, unlimited text messaging, and 20 cent per minute phone calls. [Sprint] - Don’t want a Tizen phone or smartwatch? How about a robot vacuum?
The OS also powers TVs, cameras, and refrigerators. [Tizen Experts] - Report: next-gen Acer Aspire Switch 11 2-in-1 features an Intel Core M processor
I recently reviewed Acer’s 11.6 inch 2-in-1 with a Core i3 processor and liked almost everything about it… except for the list price and the low battery life. A Core M chip could theoretically address both issues, although I wouldn’t expect a *huge* impact on battery life. [TabTech]
Does it also play funeral dirges on boot? Since they’re staying on the failed path of Windows 8 with just a few deckchairs moved around I’m not sure user acceptance and uptake can be expected to be any better… unless prople are getting desperate to replace dead PCs and end up with Windows 10 because it comes preinstalled.
A dark theme would come in handy, as far as battery life goes, for when or if they ever decide to make an OLED device. Preferably a full Windows phone.
Check out how cool it would be to have a 5.5″ 2560×1440 Windows device in your pocket.
We must have details of this!
Very cool.
That’s neat
A dark colored theme will have no effect on battery life. You have wrong ideas about how an LCD functions.
I said OLED device! That, in the photo, is a 5.5″ LCD!, and I posted it just to showcase the novelty of a new gen UMPC. Read things before you reply! This is not Snapchat.
OLED doesn’t use a backlight or LCD; it’s a matrix of pixels with tiny LEDs in them. If fewer are on, it uses less power.
