When HP canceled its webOS hardware division in 2011, the company pretty much pulled out of the smartphone space. Now HP is getting ready to make another run at smartphones, this time with a set of Android phones that will debut in India in February.

The HP Slate 6 VoiceTab and HP Slate 7 VoiceTab will be the first Android phones from HP — and despite the 6 and 7 inch screens, both devices will be marketed as voice tablets… otherwise known as big phones or “phablets.”

HP is reportedly focusing first on India because of the growing demand for smartphones and tablets in that country — there’s more of a need to fill than in the US and Europe, where the smartphone market is already pretty saturated with competing models.

Phones with large screens, sometimes called “phablets” are also gaining popularity in India.

The HP Slate 6 and HP Slate 7 are expected to feature 1280 x 720 and 1280 x 800 pixel displays, respectively, run Android 4.2 software, features 16GB of storage plus microSD card slots, have front-facing stereo speakers, and 5MP rear cameras as well as 2MP front-facing cameras.

While Re/code says HP hasn’t settled on the chip for the device, PhoneArena reports it may have a 1 GHz quad-core processor from Marvell. The phones will support 3G networks and feature dual SIM cards.

  1. I have been burned by HP so many time’s i will never buy a single product they offer.
Good choice going to India this phone could make some sales. If they price is around the same as the Note 2 clones ($145 USD) with quad core MTK chips.

  2. “it may have a 1 GHz quad-core processor from Marvell”.. Fail, but, better than nothing.

    Welcome to the race, HP.

  3. HP, I don’t see many devices like this in the US, thus I don’t see the competition to these devices in the US market.

  4. Well with cellular service costing something like 1/20th the US price in India, plus no charge for incoming calls (so 1/40th of US price) I can see why the market is huge.

  5. So it has come to that, huh?
That market already has a ton of players in it.
This reads like desparation as HP tries to leverage is name and time and time again simply rebrands other products.
