Some organizations may say that 5G technology is still a few years away from widespread deployment, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see plenty of companies throwing around the 5G name during the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona this week.
Case in point? ZTE is showing off a “forward-looking 5uper Generation” smartphone that uses “Pre5G” solutions.
Yeah.
Marketing aside, the phone does have a few nifty features, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and support for 4G LTE download speeds up to 1 Gbps.
Those super-speedy downloads come courtesy of a Qualcomm Snapdragon X16 LTE modem… which is actually last year’s tech. Qualcomm’s new model is called the X20 and it can handle speeds up to 1.2 Gbps.Â
The point is probably moot for most people though, since few cellular networks support speeds that high, and it’s only a theoretically top speed anyway, since real-world conditions mean you’ll probably have slower connection speeds most of the time.
Still, I guess it’s nice to know that ZTE is showing off its so-called Gigabit phone, because you have to start somewhere
