Quick! Someone just sent you a link to a YouTube video of a cat doing something adorable… but the flight attendant is about to tell you to turn off your phone in preparation for takeoff. What do you do? How about downloading the video to watch later?

Soon you’ll be able to do that without a third-party app. Google is about to roll out a feature that lets you save clips for offline viewing.

According to AllThingD, you’ll be able to watch clips up to 48 hours after you save them, and they’ll include ads — just like videos you watch with an active internet connection.

While there are a number of third party apps and services for downloading YouTube videos, this is the first time the company is officially supporting the feature. Offline viewing capabilities should begin rolling out in October.

  2. That’s nice but I’d rather have offline caching for sites like Netflix, Hulu and other TV and movie streaming sites.
