I’ll forgive you if you’ve never heard of Yinlips. The company typically makes portable MP3 and MP4 players, not computers. But these days the price gap between computers and portable media players isn’t so great, so I guess we shouldn’t be surprised to see companies like Yinlips taking part in the whole low-cost tiny computer frenzy.

The upcoming Yinlips Micro PC YDP-G77 definitely won’t be winning any design or performance awards. The machine features a pretty standard 7 inch screen (no resolution is listed, but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess 800 x 480 pixels) and a touchpad with buttons on the left and right side (like the buttons on the HP Mini-Note), and a ridiculously underpowered 400MHz processor.

That processor will probably help this computer achieve longer battery life than many competitors. But something tells me the Yinlips Micro PC might not be the best computer for multi-tasking or playing HD video. The product page says the Micro PC will have “long battery life,” but the same page says it has a “powerful CPU to perform demanding task,” so I’m going to take any performance claims with a grain of salt. Make that a small salt shaker.

No word on which Linux distro will be included, but Yinlips says the system will come with a web browser, media player, photo viewer, eBook reader, Abiword, Gnumeric, and other Linux software.

There’s also no word on how much RAM this PC will pack. As for storage space, the Micro PC will sport flash memory, with configurations of “500M, 1 G or higher.” Even the XO Laptop has more than 500MB, so unless this Yinlips Micro PC winds up costing less than $175, I’m going to say it’s probably a ripoff. Of course, there’s no information on pricing or availability yet.

  1. This looks very much like the 3k Longitude 400, so I’m guessing it’s the same Ingenic/Loongson 400 MHz CPU.
