The Xiaomi Box is an inexpensive device which you can plug into a TV to run Android apps and stream internet video on a TV. We’ve seen a lot of those in the past year or so. But this one is the first to come from Xiaomi, a Chinese hardware and software company known for offering high-quality products at low prices.

Xiaomi has been offering the box in China for a few months, although demand seems to generally be greater than supply. But now it looks like you can buy a Xiaomi Box even if you’re not in China.

Xiaomi Box

Several stores at AliExpress are selling the Xiaomi Box, with prices starting at around $76.

There’s just one catch: as far as I can tell, the user interface is entirely in Chinese, and as far as I’m aware there’s no easy way to change it to English or another language.

While it’s pretty simple to change the default language on a stock Android device, the Xiaomi Box isn’t running stock Android software. Instead it has Xiaomi’s custom version of Android which is pretty, easy to navigate, and in this case only available in Chinese.

If that’s not a problem for you, the Xiaomi Box features an 800 MHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, Ethernet, WiFi, and HDMI. It also comes with a wireless remote control.

  1. Bought a Xiaomi Box couple months ago and have been viewing TV programs from China without any problems until yesterday. Xiaomi Box stopped working saying that I must register to the ICNTV network with my Xiaomi account. Does anyone know how we get a Xiaomi account in the US ? Thanks.

  2. Interesting device, weird design style.. I kind of think many people who try these android players might be better off with a raspberry pi, so much easier.. I like my droid tablets, and all the nvidia tegra based tablets (Acer a500, Asus Nexus 7, etc.) are able to play most anything with the proper player apps (BS Player, V player), but rasmbc on pi works even better.

  3. we are about to launch a portal for a mass purchase of the XIaomi box. price should be much lower than the 76$ if the deal goes through

  4. Didnt show any info about the hardware configuration. Why not to take other android mini pc, Rikomagic MK802IV, MINIX ..

  5. Love my Tronsmart Prometheus. It’s like the one in the article but it’s dual core, has 3 USB ports and HDMI out. It has a standard SD card slot and has bluetooth and wifi connectivity. It’s my 10 Y.O. son’s computer. We can watch Hulu, Youtube, and Netflix, and he can play many games from the play store (except multi touch and gyro games). With a web cam, a keyboard, and a mouse it does most of what he needs a computer for. One of the best $100 investments made to date.
