We’ve seen projects to build modular smartphones, tablets, and even smartwatches recently. But Chinese company Wibtek is showing off something a little different: a modular desktop PC with stackable components that let you add features including a an optical disc drive, battery, and projector.
OK, you could make the case that most desktop PCs are modular, since you can typically replace or upgrade the memory, storage, graphics cards, and even the processors: but the same isn’t always true of small form-factory desktops like the Wibtek Q7.
Mobile Geeks got a look at pre-release Wibtek Q7 at the Computex show in Taiwan.
The central component is a PC with an Intel Braswell or Broadwell-U processor, support for up to 8GB of RAM, and 6 USB ports, VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, and COM ports, a headset jack, and an SD card slot.
Put the 350 lumen  projector module on top of the PC and you can project a 1024 x 768 pixel image at 350 lumen.
And you can put a Blu-ray or DVD drive module on the bottom of the stack to add support for reading and writing optical discs. This module also has a built-in battery which is said to let the computer function for up to 3 or 4 hours when it’s not plugged in to a wall socket. That could come in handy for giving presentations or watching movies on the go.
There’s no word on how much the Wibtek Q7 will cost, when it will be available, or whether it will be sold as a package or if you’ll be able to buy just the stackable modules that you want.
Depending on how easy this is to customize for the end user, this could be a game changer.
