Asus, Gigabyte, and a handful of other companies are busy putting out netbooks with touchscreen displays. But for the most part, those touchscreens go in the usual place: above the keyboard. Sharp’s Mebius NJ70A takes a different approach, by replacing the touchpad below the keyboard with a 4 inch, 854 x 480 pixel touchscreen secondary display. But what if you still want a touchscreen for the primary display?
That’s exactly what one hacker at UMPC Fever wanted, so he removed the mini-laptop’s primary display and replaced it with a touchscreen. For good measure he also installed Windows 7 to take full advantage of the operating system’s touchscreen capabilities.
It turns out the laptop also has a few nice surprises under the hood. When he took off the lid to install the touchscreen, the guy behind thi shack noticed two things. First, there are 2 RAM slots, which makes upgrading the memory a snap. And second, there’s a separate CPU and RAM module for the secondary touchscreen display, which means that the touchscreen/touchpad is kind of like a separate computer that’s connected to the main computer. No wonder this mini-laptop costs so much more than most netbooks!
