The developers behind the popular VLC media player for Mac, Linux, and OS X are getting ready to release VLC for Android. The app has been in development for years, but a public beta will be available in the Google Play Store within the next few days.

VLC for Android

VLC for Android will support phones and tablets running Android 2.1 through Android 4.0 on a variety of devices. It’s been tested on the phones including the Google Nexus One, HTC Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S3, and HTC One X, with varying results.

For instance, while older phones like the Nexus One can support H.264 480p HD video playback, higher video resolutions require newer, faster chips.

VLC has a reputation for supporting a wide range of audio and video file formats, and the Android app will be no different. But you’ll get the best performance on phones with support for hardware video decoding in a range of formats.

The app will also support multi-core video decoding on devices with ARM Cortex-A7, Cortex-A9, and Cortex-A15 chips.

VLC will also support subtitles in a range of formats as well as videos with multiple audio tracks.

If you want to help move the development of VLC for Android forward, the team is accepting cash contributions as well as donations of phones for developers to work with. You can also help test early builds of VLC found in the VideoLan forums.

  1. Excellent. I just sent them $5 with a note asking they bring it to x86 Google TV devices. Perhaps someday!

  2. I hope the Android version supports VOBs. Other Android media players don’t play VOBs, so one has to go through the hassle and delay of transcoding them.

  3. Is VLC still buggy? Tried it on Mac OS, Windows and Ubuntu a year ago and I got crashes, subtitle issues, sync issues, lagging, stuttering, video corruption, etc. It plays many files but not well. Is it any better now? I’m using mplayer (Ubuntu) and MPC-HC (Windows) right now.

    1. Interesting, I have the opposite experience, usually VLC is the only player that works without problems.
