Vizio is best known for making inexpensive televisions. But the company is getting into the computer space, and while its first laptops aren’t exactly cheap, they’re actually very reasonably priced by ultrabook standards. And at least two of the first notebooks from Vizio are ultrabooks, featuring thin and light cases and Intel Ivy Bridge processors.

With starting prices of around $900, Vizio’s 14 and 15.6 inch ultaportable laptops would be reasonably competitive against offerings from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung. But Vizio is also packing in a premium features that you’d normally expect on more expensive ultrabooks: high resolution displays.

Vizio ultrabooks

Vizio’s 14 inch model has a 1600 x 900 pixel display, while the 15.6 inch ultrabook has a 1920 x 1080 pixel screen.

Both notebooks measure less than 0.33 inches thick and feature Intel third generation Core series processors and Intel HD 400 graphics.

Starting models will have Core i3 processors, 4GB of memory, and 128GB solid state disks, but Core i7 CPUs and 256GB disks will also be available.

The ultrabooks feature HDMI and USB 3.0 ports, but Laptop Magazine reports they don’t have SD card slots.

Both laptops have aluminum unibody designs, which The Verge describes as not feeling as solid or “hefty” as an Apple notebook — but considering the lower starting price tag, that’s to be expected. On the other hand, it might just a matter of opinion. Gizmodo calls the notebooks “fantastically sturdy.”

Vizio will also offer a 15.6 inch notebook with NVIDA Kepler graphics, an Intel Ivy Bridge processor, and a 1080p display.

  1. I still would rather have a thicker laptop with all those specs for much cheaper.
No SD reader/writer is a big bummer, along with the fact that there are only 2 (?) USB 3 ports.

    1. apparently that’s not their aim. there are many mainstream manufacturers out there that produce exactly the type of computers you prefer.

    2. They also have a thicker laptop on offer that imo is a way better deal, and most certainly has an sd drive. $1200 for quad-core i7, 8 gigs of ram, and 1tb hard drive. I was drooling at it a bit.

      1. It seems like their lowest end products are the worst deal, god I need to get one of those.

  2. Oy, What hath Jobs wrought! Rather than cheap, plentiful and most importantly, expendable netbooks we end up with expensive Supermodel notebooks. And just like supermodels, they won’t age well at all, although at least you can perform surgery on human supermodels to keep them from becoming obsolete. I doubt you can do that with these notebooks.

I really hope somebody really runs with the A10 based “Android Book” form factor and makes it into a $100 “Air”.

If the SSD failed (which seems to happen more and more often these days), you would probably break the back cover trying to replace it…
