There are a growing number of smartphones with dual camera systems on the back of the phone, allowing you to adjust depth, apply optical zoom effects, or snap special photos in other ways.

But the Vivo V5 Plus is one of the first phones I’m aware of to feature dual cameras on the front.

I guess sometimes you want to snap high-quality selfies. It just seems odd that this phone has only a single camera on the back, which means that many of its photography features are only available for selfies.

The phone has the specs of a decent upper mid-range device, including a 5.5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a fingerprint sensor, an all-metal body, and a Hi-Fi audio chip.

But it’s the camera setup that makes this phone unusual.

On the back of the Vivo V5 Plus there’s a 16MP camera with LED flash and 4K video recording support.

On the front, there’s a 20MP camera and a secondary 8MP camera. You can use the two cameras to apply a bokeh/portrait mode effect that keeps the foreground of an image in focus while blurring the background. You can also refocus a photo after it’s saved.

The 20MP camera uses a Sony IMX376 image sensor, while the 8MP camera is there for capturing depth details.

There’s also a “Selfie Softlight” flash on the front that lets you make sure your shots from the front-facing cameras are well lit.

The Vivo V5 Plus should be available in Asia and India soon.
