The team behind the Vivaldi tablet is getting ready to take orders from customers soon. The tablet looks like any other Android device — but it will be the first device to ship with KDE Plasma Active software running on the Mer Linux operating system.
Developer Aaron Seigo has provided a few updates about the Vivaldi Tablet. First, it will ship with 1GB of RAM rather than the 512MB that had originally been planned.
Second, he’s put together a screencast showing a sneak peek at the add-ons store for the tablet. This is the Vivaldi’s version of an App Store.
The Make.Play.Live add-ons and content store will let you download eBooks, wallpapers, services, apps, widgets, and more.
The goal is to attract developers who will offer free and paid apps. When you’re talking about open source software though, there’s another meaning of “free” and Seigo says he expects to see Free software (as in speech) with price tags as well as Free software that’s also free.
One of the things that makes the Make.Play.Live add-ons and content store different from app stores from Apple, Google, or Microsoft is that it’s designed as a free and open source front-end for a content store. Anyone can build their own app stores using Make.Play.Live as the user interface.
