ViewSonic is a company better known for making LCD products than computers. But during CES this year the company did show off a stunningly bland looking ViewSonic VieBook netbook model. I haven’t seen the mini-laptop show up at any US-based stores yet, but it looks like ViewSonic is getting ready to launch the netbook in China.

DigiTimes reports that ViewSonic is looking to expand its product line in China, with items including netbooks and notebooks. It’s not clear if the company plans to sell the same VieBook it was showing off earlier this year in China or if it has new models up its sleeve. The VieBook has a 10.2 inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, a 1.3MP camera, a 4-in-1 card reader, and runs Windows XP. ViewSonic had said the computer would begin shipping in February. Has anyone actually seen one yet?

  1. My 4 year old (and still running flawlessly) ThinkPad T42 and millions of other IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad could also be described as “stunningly bland looking”.

  2. Brad, not that bland. It has a built in multi card reader and is all matte finish (shell and screen). Both are advantages over many of the other units available as far as I am concerned. In this world of “me to” netbooks the little things make a difference. It would be nice if more manufacturers took a few risks but it doesn’t seem very likely in this economy.

  3. How about Viewsonic differentiating by offering a higher resolution than the 10″ netbook standard? Just how much more is Microsoft charging for XP on a resolution higher than 1024×600 anyway? It seems that all but a couple of netbook makers refuse to differentiate.

If the netbook producers offered the higher resolution with Ubuntu installed I’m guessing plenty of us would just retire an old XP license and install it on the netbook. Eventually Microsoft would capitulate or Windows 7 would hit and be made an affordable option.

Netbooks producers need to get out of the boring 1024×600 rut and absolutely drop the glossy screen nonsense. How about a Samsung NC15 with a 1280×800 11″ non glossy screen?
