Hot on the heels of the VIA eNote Turnkey Solution, chip-maker VIA has unveiled yet another reference design for mini-laptops. The VIA NetNote Turnkey System seems to be rather flexible, and covers laptops with VIA C7-M or VIA Nano processors with screen sizes ranging from 10.2 inches to 12.1 inches.

At first glance, the images of the new NetNote prototypes look a lot like the eNote, but there are a few subtle differences including a touchpad with two buttons and a slightly different layout for ports around the sides of the computer.

VIA doesn’t sell laptops itself, but by putting out these reference designs, the company makes it easy for white-box PC makers to crank out laptops that should play well with VIA’s processor and graphics chipsets. So we might start to see computers based on these designs popping up soon.

Here’s a rundown of the NetNote specifications:

  • CPU: VIA C7-M or Nano
  • FSB: 800MHz
  • Chipset: VX855 Media System processor
  • Display: 10.2″ inch 12.1 inch screen with 1024 x 600 to 1366 x 768 pixel resolution
  • OS: Windows XP, Vista, or Linux
  • RAM: Up to 2GB
  • Storage: 160G or 320G hard drive
  • Connectivity: 802.11b/g WiFi, EV-DO and W-CDMA options
  • I/O: Ethernet, 2 USB, mic, headphone, D-sub
  • Camera: 0.3MP

  1. These reference designs are pretty ‘old school’ and because of that I rather doubt that will ‘inspire’ much. Sure, the point of them isn’t the design they are meant to show, “This works with these parts..see.” but they still make me snoore, and I’m sure other white-box PC makers will yawn as well.
