The Velocity Micro R101 Cruz Reader isn’t a speed demon. It doesn’t have a super high resolution display. It doesn’t run the latest version of Android. Let’s face it, as Android tablets go, it’ snot all that impressive. But here’s the thing: It’s cheap. The Cruz R101 has a list price of $150, but you can usually find it for closer to $120. And today Woot.com is offering the tablet for $80 plus $5 for shipping.

In other words, if you’re looking for a dirt cheap device that you can use to read eBooks, surf the web, watch movies, or run some Android apps, you could certainly do worse.

The tablet has a 7 inch, 800 x 600 pixel resistive touchscreen display and runs Google Android 2.0. It has 256MB of RAM and comes with a 4GB internal micro SDHC card.

The Velocity Micro R101 Cruz has 802.11b/g WiFi, supports MP3, AAC, and WAV audio and PEG-4 and H.264 video and the manufacturer promises up to 10 hours of battery life from the user replaceable battery. The tablet measures 7.5″ x 5.6″ x 0.57″ and weighs about 1 pound.

The tablet doesn’t officially support the Android Market out of the box, but you should be able to install third party app stores such as the Amazon Appstore. You can also root the device and install custom firmware if you’re feeling ambitious, or hack the tablet to work with the Android Market.

  1.  To correct Guest 2, the r101 has an ARM 11 Samsung processor capable of going up to 800mhz. It’s not a speed demon by any means, but with the right custom firmware, it can be a decent android tablet.  I own the Pandigital reader (white edition) which is the equivalent of this e-book reader.

If you want more information, go to slatedroid.com and there’s an entire subforum dedicated to both tablets/e-readers.

  2. This deal is dead on arrival.  Read the feedback on Amazon.com, to wit:

    https://www.amazon.com/Velocity-T103-7-Inch-Android-Tablet/product-reviews/B0045I8E42/ref=cm_cr_pr_hist_1?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&filterBy=addOneStar

    – CPU is MIPS, which is not ARM compatible.  Good luck finding a lot of
software.  This is why it doesn’t have Android Marketplace access, and
probably why the Android OS on it, version 2.0, will never likely be
    upgraded.

    – the CPU speed is < 1 GHz (could be as slow as 600 MHz).  Users complain about how s-l-o-w it is.

    – weight is 1.5 lb, as much as the original iPad, which has a 10"
screen.  This has a lot of batteries to make up for the power-hungry
    CPU.

There are more issues, but the two above would be dealbreakers for
    me.

You're probably better off spending a more money and considering the
refurbished Samsung Galaxy Tabs being offered by several of the
    major carriers.

By the way, if anyone's noticed, it appears Amazon.com has acquired
    Woot.com

    1. Dude, it’s $79.99…..I have it, it plays video, surfs, does a good job with epubs, and I’ve added about a dozen apps…NO MODS. I didn’t mod it at all.
      You’re a douchebag.
