The company behind the popular Ubuntu Linux software for desktop, notebook, and server computers has already expressed interest in the smartphone space. Earlier this year Canonical unveiled plans for Ubuntu for Android, a platform that lets a single phone run both Android and Ubuntu, allowing you to make phone calls or run Android apps… or plug in a mouse, keyboard, and display and use your phone like an Ubuntu desktop PC.

Now a Canonical job listing suggests the company may be working on an Ubuntu Phone OS.

The company is seeking a business development manager for Ubuntu Phone OS to develop relationships with industry partners and build a commercial ecosystem around an Ubuntu smartphone operating system.

It’s possible this is just another way of discussing the company’s Ubuntu for Android platform. But it also sounds like Canonical could be developing a version of Ubuntu with full smartphone functionality.

In other words, in the future you might be able to buy a phone running Ubuntu rather than Android, iOS, Windows Phone, or another mobile software platform.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Canonical is just one of many Linux software companies looking at this concept. Smartphone sales are growing much more quickly than PC sales and represent a huge market. Meanwhile, the folks behind the Tizen project are working to make Linux-based software more smartphone friendly.

  1. Ubuntu for Android is for Phones, which plug into external peripherals, not tablets. I did think that was very clear in all the relevant information.

  2. Ubuntu For Android has much bigger potential currently than Ubuntu Phone OS.

I hope they concentrate on that because I would like to see it on my HP Touchpad and Transformer Prime as soon as possible.

  3. Would be wonderful except it would run some combination of Unity and HUD, the two worst UIs in history.
