ubuntu-netbook-remix-904The other day I took the latest version of Ubuntu 9.04 beta for a spin on my Eee PC 1000H and reported that the operating system now seems to feature out of the box support for a number of netbooks. That means the screen resolution, touchpad, WiFi, and other hardware should work without any tweaking. But there’s god news for  fans of the Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface, which Canonical designed to make it easier to launch programs and use them in full screen mode on devices with low resolution displays. Because UNR is more tightly integrated with the main branch of Ubuntu now.

In practical terms, that means two things:

  1. You can now download an Ubuntu Netbook Remix USB disk image that will let you run the netbook version of the operating system from a Flash drive without installing it (although you can also use the USB stick to install the OS).
  2. You can also install the UNR interface on top of a normal Ubuntu system by typing “sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook-remix” into a terminal window. It’s no longer necessary to install half a dozen different packages.

I also keep looking at the Ubuntu Netbook Remix interface and thinking how much more sense it would make with a touchscreen device. Hopefully we’ll be able to test it out with convertible tablet style netbooks like the Asus Eee PC T91 and Gigabyte Touch Note soon.

  1. I download the UNR USB disk image… now whats next?? how do I install this image on a flash drive?? Can anybody help me, I search google but did not find a solution.

  2. I have to agree on the touchscreen comment about UNR. It does lend itself to a touchscreen. AFAIK, Xorg does have touchscreen support, but I don’t know how good that support is. A friend of mine was able to get touchscreen working on tablet PC with Hardy, so I imagine it would be possible with UNR Jaunty.
