After running a successful Kickstarter campaign this summer, the folks behind the Ubik Uno smartphone are getting ready to ship a phone with a 5.5 inch full HD display, super-slim bezels, an octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, a 20MP camera, and a 3,100 mAh battery.

The Ubik Uno should begin shipping to backers of the crowdfunding campaign by the third week of October. Didn’t get a chance to back the campaign? No problem — you can reserve one from the Ubik website for the same Kickstarter-level price of $305 (including shipping).

After a month or two, the price will go up, but not by much. Ubik says the full retail price for the phone is just $320.

I got a chance to play with the phone for a few minutes, and while it didn’t have an internet connection or a lot of apps pre-installed, the phone felt good in my hands, seemed to handle basic navigation just fine, and snapped some decent photos. The auto-focus feature for the Sony Exmor RS IMX230 camera also seems pretty snappy.

The phone can also record 4K video at 30 frames per second, 1080p video at 60 fps, or 720p at 120 fps.

The 1920 x 1080 pixel display is nice and bright, and the fact that there are virtually no bezels means that the front of the phone is nearly all screen.

Ubik’s Uno features an aluminum frame around the sides of the phone, a Gorilla Glass 3 screen, and a plastic back. The rear panel is not removable, so there’s no way to replace the battery, but Ubik says you can fully charge the battery in under 3 hours.

The phone features a 2.2 GHz MediaTek MT6795 octa-core processor, runs stock Android 5.1 Lollipop software, and features a microSD card slot. Ubik says the UNO will work with all major North American wireless carriers, but you’ll only get 4G LTE speeds on GSM networks. The phone supports 3G on CDMA networks such as Sprint and Verizon.

Overall, the Uno seems like a pretty interesting device for Ubik’s first phone. You get a lot of phone for not a lot of money. But Ubik is a new company that has no real track record with providing software updates or other support… so it’s not entirely clear yet if what you see is all you will ever get.

  1. Gearbest has the same spec phones for under $200. So its a phone made in China, don’t let the name Ubik fool you. This is made in China too!

  2. Not a good company that communicates with its backers. Was supposed to be shipped and delivered by now. The October date is a major delay and upsetting to the community. I’m waiting for my refund!

    1. You can install an sd card up to 64 gb. 16 gb + 64 gb sd card = 80 gb which is pretty good. In order to keep the price of the phone down they had to compromise somewhere.

      1. Most apps won’t allow SD storage, external storage in my option is only useful for pictures/videos. They could of at least included 32 GB. 16 is not enough internal storage these days with the increased size of apps/games.

        1. I wouldn’t be surprised if the number of people who need more than 16GB on their Android phone (excluding photos & video) is still well below 10% overall. I’ve been using my 16GB Nexus 10 tablet on a daily basis for the past two years, and except when I load it with video to watch on my occasional long haul flights, I’ve never come close to running out of space. I have about half-a-dozen games installed, including Hearthstone, which takes up 1GB on its own.

  3. They stopped communicating with their backers 10 days ago… after announcing production had hit some “delays”. No updates. I hope my money hasn’t been wasted on this kickstarter!

    1. Charlie, there have been several updates by Ubik in the past 8 days on their Kickstarter page. Further, this is a very positive review of the phone. I am a backer also and I am more than confident that the phone will get to us this month. Given the information in this article, I am curious as to why you are questioning whether you have wasted your money.

    1. I’d rather go for a Huawei Ascend Mate 7. Costs about as much on ebay nowadays, and has a fingerprint reader.

  4. There’s something ominous about a company named after one of the most depressing Philip K. Dick books!

  5. Interesting specs that sound impressive at first. Is there any other phone on the market now that is close to this in specs?
