Motorola’s Moto Z smartphone has decent specs for a 2016 flagship phone, but it’s the phone’s support for a series hardware add-ons that make it special.
They’re called MotoMods and there are currently models that let you add a projector, a big battery, a better camera, or a louder speaker to the phone. Soon there will be two more MotoMods.
Honestly, they’re not all that exciting in their own right… but they show that Motorola and hardware partners are continuing to invest in the platform.
First up is a new Mophie Juice Pack MotoMod, which features a 3,000 mAh battery, a USB Type-C port (so you can charge the battery independently of the phone), and a status light.
This isn’t the first battery module for the Moto Z, but it’s nice to have options. The Mophie Juice Pack should set you back about $80. Or you could just save some money and buy  cheap USB battery pack that’s less elegant, but a lot cheaper and versatile (since you can probably use it to charge a bunch of devices and not just a single brand of smartphones).
Next up is the $65 Incipio Car Dock which works a lot like a desktop dock for a laptop… except it’s for a smartphone and your car. The dock clips to the air conditioning vent of your car and plugs into the stereo system via a 3.5mm jack and the cigarette lighter for power.
In other words, you don’t need to run a bunch of wires into your phone every time you get into your car. Just snap it onto the dock and your phone will charge and hook into your audio system right away. When docked, your phone will also automatically load up the Android Auto user interface.
PC World reports that future Mods could include features like E Ink screens, baby monitors, or 5G modems, providing an upgrade to next-gen mobile internet without the need to buy a new phone.
