The developers of the open source Tizen operating system have released the source code for Tizen 2.3, and it’s not just for smartphones and tablets anymore. Tizen 2.3 includes support for wearable profiles.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2

While Tizen was originally developed as a platform for smartphone and tablets, there are no phones or Tizen tablets shipping yet. That could change in the future, but there are already a few Samsung devices on the market, including cameras and wearable devices like the Samsung Gear line of smartwatches and activity trackers.

Tizen already offers developer tools for wearable devices, and Samsung has a software development kit for its Gear line of smartwatches. But those are based on earlier versions of Tizen.

For the most part the release of the source code for Tizen 2.3 is aimed at developers (and at complying with open source licensing terms). But it could make it easier for companies other than Samsung to release wearable devices based on Tizen… and make it easier for third party developers to create software for Samsung’s existing wearable devices.
