Apple released a minor iOS update this week, and within hours hackers figured out how to jailbreak it. A pre-release version of the firmware for a new phone with HTC Sense 3.0 software hit the web, and hackers have already figured out how to run the software on other phones. You’ve got to love hackers.

But even if you’ve never rooted or jailbroken your phone, there have been plenty of exciting stories at our mobile app blog Mobiputing worth checking out this week. Here are some of the highlights.


A new home screen replacement called Regina 3D Launcher hit the scene, with attractive widgets and slick 3D animated effects when you flip through virtual home screens.

Lee Mathews spotted a nifty utility called Get it Later that lets you queue downloads when you’re on a 3G connection so that you don’t waste your bandwidth. As soon as you connect to a WiFi network, the app will begin downloading your queued files.

We dug up two slick new apps for browsing reddit on Android devices, BaconReader for Android phones and Reddita for tablets.

D7 Google Reader may be even better than the official Google Reader app for reading your RSS feeds on the go.

Everybody’s favorite custom ROM for Android phones CyanogenMod received a major update this week. CM7 is now available for more than 30 devices.


An iPhone developer figured out a killer way to squeeze live weather forecasts (or at least the current temperature) onto the home screen by using Apple’s notification system.

The Twittersphere is going wild over a new Twitter client called TweetBot which puts Twitter’s official app to shame.

Adobe launched Creative Suite 5.5 with a new Extend feature that lets you use iPad apps to interact with Photoshop or other CS programs running on your computer

Windows Phone 7

Microsoft has been showing off a number of features that will come in the next major update to Windows Phone 7. The so-called Mango update will offer multitasking, support for HTML5 in the web browser, and more ways to use Live Tiles on the home screen.
