The Sunflex unu is a 7 inch Android tablet with a quad-core processor, a 1280 x 800 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. But while those specs hardly set the tablet apart from the crowd, the optional accessories do.
Sunflex is offering a Media Edition version of the tablet for $200, featuring a docking station and an air mouse. You can hook the dock up to your TV and use it to turn your television into an Android-powered Smart TV.
Or for $250 you can get a Gaming Edition with a wireless game controller.
Update: Sunflex has renamed the tablet as the Snakebyte Vyper and says a few thousand units will be available in December, with wider availability at stores including GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon and Newegg in January.
The tablet and accessories are expected to ship in early November December. Both the Media Edition and Gaming Edition come with a basic tablet dock which connects to the tablet’s HDMI and USB ports and lets you connect the device to your TV.
There’s also an optional Premium Dock that hooks up to a 40-pin connector on the tablet and adds 2 full-sized USB ports, an Ethernet jack, and a 3.5mm audio jack as well as HDMI output.
Sunflex introduced the unu tablet in January, so it’s clearly taken a little time to move from the prototype to real device stage. There’s a lot more competition than there used to be in the Android gaming space with handheld devices like the NVIDIA Shield and Archos GamePad already on the market, and set-top-boxes like the Ouya and GameStick.
But the unu is one of the few devices designed to work both as a tablet and a home entertainment or gaming console — although you could theoretically use any Android tablet with HDMI output and Bluetooth connectivity for a remote and/or game controller in a similar fashion.
