The Sony Reader PRS-T3 has a 6 inch, 758 x 1024 pixel E Ink display, a battery that’s good for up to 2 months of use, 2GB of storage and a microSD card slot if you need more space, and new technology that causes the screen to flash to black less often while you’re flipping pages in eBooks.

But Sony has no plans to sell the PRS-T3 in the United States.

Sony Reader PRS-T3

The company launched its newest eReader during the IFA trade show in Berlin earlier this month, and plans to sell the device in select markets. But according to The Digital Reader, the US won’t be one of those markets.

Instead, Sony will try to push its other devices including the Xperia Z smartphone and tablet lines. You can use the Sony Reader Store and Reader apps to buy and read eBooks on any of those devices.

In fact, there’s nothing stopping you from downloading the Sony Reader app from the Google Play Store and using it on almost any Android device. There’s also no particularly good reason why you would want to do that — unless you’re a former Sony Reader user and you want to access your existing collection of eBooks on a different device. But since Sony’s eBook store uses Adobe DRM, you can use any number of other eBook apps to read books from Sony’s store.

Sony’s been offering eBook readers longer than most companies. But the market is much more competitive than it used to be — especially with Amazon and Barnes & Noble constantly driving down the price of eReader hardware.

  1. I’m personally more interested in Sony’s 13.3″ e-reader, but I suspect they will not even try to market it in the US. Shame. Some of us need to read pdfs full screen.
