Netbooks are light enough to throw in a small bag and carry with you wherever you go. Smartphones are even smaller and lighter, and fit in your pocket. But there are compromises that come with these portable devices. It’s hard to fit a large screen or keyboard on a device that’s designed primarily for portability.

But that could change in the future. There’s been a lot of research into flexible displays over the past few years, and Sony has put out an awesome video of a Sony rollable display that can show full motion video as it’s being rolled and unrolled.

Sony’s display is an OLED screen that measures just about 4 inches and has a 432 x 240 pixel resolution.

The technology isn’t quite ready for prime time yet — and even when it does hit the streets, I don’t expect it to be cheap. But we’re one step closer to a day when you can sit yourself down in front of a computer, video game console, TV, or other device with a 15 or 20 inch display and then roll it up and stick it in your pocket when it’s time to go.  Or maybe we’ll just see funky wristwatches.

  1. Eh, who cares…it’s from Sony – you know, the company that bricks your hardware if they don’t like what its being used for after you buy it…

    first thought is: “How to make a buck” with this thing.

    Hmm… It can be rolled, can it be handled?

    Folks who have done a fair amount of restaurant visiting will know:
    Rule 1: Table is never ready; make customer’s wait in bar (spending money).

    Attach these things to the surface of the glassware –
    Also play advertisements on the glass while customer is waiting in bar.
    Add flex speakers to glassware surface –
    Now you have a complete audio/video “advertising space” on each glass.

    Ah, so – commercialized glassware ad space;
    Ideal for those restaurant investors, who in a prior life, used 45% of the
    page width of their blogs for advertisements. 😉
