Chinese gaming company Snail Games has unveiled a new line of gaming smartphones, the Snail Games W and Snail Games W 3D. In case the name wasn’t a giveaway, the second model has 3D display features.
It uses eye-tracking technology to display glasses-free 3D effects on the screen, much like Amazon’s Fire Phone. But unlike the Fire Phone, the Snail Games W series smartphones feature gaming buttons on the sides of the display.
The phone is launching in China in January, but Snail Games has plans to bring it to the United States and other markets.
It’s powered by a 2.2 GHz MediaTek MTK6595 octa-core processor, features a 5.5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a microSDXC card slot, and a 4000mAh battery. The phone has front and rear cameras, WiFi, Bluetooth, and 4G LTE and runs Google Android 4.4 KitKat.
Above the gaming buttons on the left side of the phone there are two cameras for eye-tracking.
Snail Games is demonstrating its 3D effects with a game and a few videos, and you can certainly see some 3-dimensional imagery when the phone is positioned correctly. But Amazon learned, 3D may be something that helps a phone stand out, but it doesn’t necessarily make it a best-seller.
Still, Snail Games may have at least one thing going for it… at least in the company’s home country of China. Snail was a video game company before getting into hardware. The Snail Games W series phones will come with 30 games pre-loaded.
In the United States, the phones will be sold unlocked and Snail Games says they’ll be “compatible with most US network providers.”
The company is also showing off the recently announced OBox game console with an NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor and support for 4K video playback as well as 3D games.
more news on the Obox please Brad 🙂
They’re not really sharing any more news. They plan to bring it to the US this year, but there’s no word on price.
