It’s a bit early to tell whether 3D is truly the wave of the future, or just a gimmick that got a lot of people to go see Avatar in the theaters. But a lot of folks in the tech industry are investing a lot of time and money in 3D technology in the hopes of getting you to buy new TVs, computers, and other devices in the next few years. And a growing number of movies, video games, and other media are starting to come out in 3D, which means that there’ll actually be something to look at if you do break down and buy 3D capable devices.

The biggest problem with most 3D displays is that you need to put on a special pair of glasses to use use them. But Sharp is showing off a new 10 inch display that can show 3D pictures and video — no glasses required.

The screen could end up in tablets, eBook readers, or netbooks of the future — although I suspect that adding a 3D display to a netbook will probably drive the price up enough to make people question whether it’s really a netbook at all. But if Sharp’s new display technology takes off, prices will probably come down over time.
