Seagate, a company best known for making hard drives, has announced that it has something to announce. Yeah, I know, it’s hard to contain your excitement, but this could actually be pretty cool. According to The Register, Seagate will introduce a “perfect companion” for the Apple iPad and other tablets this month.
The company isn’t saying what type of product this companion will be, but I’m not going too far out on a limb by guessing that it’ll have something to do with storage. Thats’ what Seagate does, after all.
What’s not clear is whether we’re talking about some sort of physical storage solution that will help make up for the fact that few of today’s tablets offer more than 64GB of disk space. While some Android tablets offer USB host capabilities, which would let you just plug in an external hard drive, the Apple iPad is a bit trickier due to a proprietary docking port and the lack of USB host support or even a file browser.
I could also envision Seagate getting into the cloud storage space, giving you an online storage locker that you can use with an iPad or other tablet — although The Register reports that Seagate is promising a “first-of-a-kind” product, and there’s no shortage of cloud storage services around.
