Samsung is holding an event September 3rd where the company is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, among other things.

If leaks and benchmark results posted online are anything to go by, Samsung’s next big-screen phone will have a high-resolution display, 3GB of RAM, and one of the company’s first 64-bit processors. It’s called the Exynos 5433 and it’s expected to be an 8-core chip based on ARMv8 architecture.

Meanwhile CNX-Software has discovered hints of something called a Samsung Exynos 7 processor which is also a 64-bit, ARMv8 chip. It could be the same processor… or it could be something else.

Either way, it looks like the Exynos 5433 will feature 4 ARM Cortex-A57 CPU cores paired with 4 lower-power Cortex-A53 cores in a big.LITTLE design. This lets the phone use whichever CPU cores are more appropriate for the task at hand in order to balance performance and battery life.

The chip is also expected to feature ARM Mali-T760 graphics, and if the benchmark results from AnTuTu are accurate, the new chip is almost as fast as the NVIDIA Tegra K1. While NVIDIA’s chip appears to have the edge, there aren’t any phones that use the processor yet.

As for the Exynos 7, some folks working to add Linux kernel support for the chip have posted details describing it as a single-core ARM Cortex-A57 processor. It’s unlikely that it’s actually a single-core chip, but it’s possible that code to support more than one CPU core at a time is still in development.
