Samsung X120 from Trusted Reviews

The Samsung X120 is a thin and light laptop with an Intel Consumer Ultra Low Voltage processor that’s available in the UK. Last I heard Samsung hadn’t decided whether to bring this model to the US yet, but if you happen to be in the UK or another country where you can get your hands on this laptop, here’s what you need to know: CNET and Trusted Reviews have both published reviews of the X120, and it seems to offer decent performance (about 2-3 times faster than a typical netbook), a nice wide keyboard, and a decent, but small touchpad with buttons on the sides instead of the bottom.

But there is one major down side: The Samsung X120 gets awful battery life. The machine packs a 4,000mAh 4 cell battery. Even with the low power 1.3GHz Intel Pentium SU4100 dual core processor, that battery just isn’t going to provide the kind of run time we’ve come to expect from netbooks and thin and light laptops over the past year or two. Both CNET and Trusted Reviews figure the battery’s good for maybe 2.5 hours. Running the CPU-intensive Battery Eater classic test, CNET managed to run down the battery in just 1 hour and 36 minutes.

That’s disappointing coming from Sasmung, a company known for making netbooks such as the NC10 and N310 Go with stellar battery performance.

  1. Gee, a 2.20 lb computer that has more performance and a nice big screen compared to past netbooks…oh, and fantastic fit and finish as always with a Samsung.

Okay [smiles]. Now, I see why people are complaining, they are brain damaged! I knew there was a good explanation.

  2. You can add hellishly expensive to the list of downsides, at least in Europe.Paying over the odds for an NC10 wasn’t a problem due to it’s allround excellence. But putting this up against the Acer1410/Lenovo U150 with it costing £100 more in many places is ridiculous.
