Samsung has been showing off transparent display technology for years, but now the company’s going big. This week Samsung unveiled 55 inch Transparent and Mirror OLED display panels.
It’ll probably be a while before this sort of technology is affordable enough for use in your home. But Samsung figures there are plenty of uses for these displays in retail and other commercial settings.
For example, add an Intel RealSense camera to the Mirror display and you can create a virtual fitting room with an interactive system that shows you what clothing, jewelry, or other items would look like if you tried them on.
The transparent display can be used for interactive signage that displays information without blocking your view. Samsung imagines this could be used in car dealerships, hotels, or transportion hubs.
Eventually these technologies could bring smart features to the home. A smart mirror would let you check the weather or check your email while you check your hair, while transparent display could be used to create smart windows… or something.
I think that is really cool.
Looks like the minority report. Just add gestures which Samsung already has.
Nice first step, especially since it only requires leaving out the black backing to get transparent or putting a mirror behind the panel. Now comes the harder part to make it more practical, adding the alpha channel. The basic tech is nothing but adding a monochrome LCD backing panel to selectively darken areas of the display. The hard part will be extending the HDMI spec to carry alpha and getting video cards to output alpha. Suppose a first quick and dirty version could be built by using two hdmi ports, sending the color primary image in on one and the alpha on the other. Or even invoke 3D mode and display the left image as the image and the right as alpha. But those would only be temporary hacks useful to demonstrate the usefulness of the concept.
a hack could be to use pure black as transparent. likely not very pretty on the edges but it would work.
laptops please! If there is a potential of burn in we could always go back to flying toasters. 🙂
