While the Samsung Sliding Series tablet/notebook grabbed a lot of headlines at CES last month, it wasn’t the only thin and light Windows laptop Samsung unveiled. The company also introduced the new Samsung 9 Series which weighs less than 2.9 pounds and measures less than 0.7 inches thick. I pretty much ignored it though, because it has a 13.3 inch display and a starting price of $1599 which means the 9 Series isn’t particularly cheap or portable.
But now Provantage is showing listings for an unannounced model with an 11.6 inch screen. There are no details on how much the laptop weighs, and with a starting price of $1165, it’s still too expensive. But it’s getting a little closer to the sweet spot.
According to the product page the laptop has a 1.33 GHz Intel Core i3-380UM processor, 2GB of memory, a 64GB solid state disk, and a 1366 x 78 pixel display. The laptop has just 1 USB 2.0 port and a USB 3.0 port, HDMI utput, mic and headphone jacks, a micro SD card slot, 802.11n, Gigabit Ethernet, and Bluetooth 3.0. It has a 5680mAh battery and runs Windows 7 Home Premium.
The product imagse on Provantage are clearly just placeholders though, as they show a laptop with an optical disc drive and without the distinctive curves of a Samsung 9 Series laptop.

It is nice that it is super thin, but for only $600 I could buy an Acer TimelineX 11.6″ with i3 or even an i5 for a bit more. I could buy a Acer, put in an SSD, and still undercut the Samsung price. Sure, it won’t be a slick looking, but it will do the same job – just as well – for less.
Ok, but what kind of chassis will it have? Plastic?
