If you thought that WiMAX and LTE technologies which allow wireless carriers to offer mobile data rates of up to 60Mbps were fast, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Samsung is showing off a new WiMAX 2 demo at CEATEC in Japan, with speeds up to 330Mbps.
The demo shows 16 HD vidoes streaming to 4 different displays at the same time using a WiMAX 2 connection.
Of course there’s a huge difference between a theoretical top speed achieved under ideal conditions and real-world performance. In the US, WiMAX provider CLEAR only promises download speeds up to 6Mbps, which is much lower than the theoretical limit of WiMAX.
Oh yeah, WiMAX also isn’t even available in most of the US yet… so while the WiMAX 2 spec will be finalized soon and devices will start rolling out in late 2011, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for this technology to show up in your neighborhood.
