4K displays might be overkill for smartphones if you just want to use them as phones… but now that many phones can double as virtual reality displays, a growing number of companies are producing small screens with more pixels than you’ll find on most 32 inch TVs.
Case in point: UploadVR notes that this week Samsung showed off a 5.5 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel display at SID Display Week.
The screen 806 pixels per inch, which means you’d normally have to hold it very close to your to tell one pixel from another. But put the screen in a VR headset and it could help eliminate the “screen door effect” you get when using 1080p or lower-resolution screens.
The Samsung screen is reportedly a prototype, but it’s not hard to imagine the display making its way to future smartphones that can be used with Samsung Gear VR headsets, or maybe a standalone VR device.
Samsung’s small 4K display isn’t exactly the first smartphone-sized 3840 x 2160 pixel display. Sony launched an Xperia Z5 Premium smartphone last year, featuring a similar display, and other companies have produced 6 inch, 2160p screens.
