The Samsung Series 5 Ultrabook is a thin and light laptop with an Intel Core i5 processor, quick boot and quick resume technology. Samsung will offer three models, with prices ranging from $900 to $1100, and it looks like the first two are already available for pre-order.
Amazon and J&R are both taking pre-orders for Series 5 ultrabooks with 13.3 inch and 14 inch displays. Both have 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drives with 16GB of solid state cache, and 1366 x 768 pixel matte displays.
The 14 inch model also has a DVD drive.
Both laptops also have Intel WiDi wireless display technology, WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 3.0, and HDMI output. The 13 inch ultrabook weighs 3.2 pounds and measures 0.7 inches thick while the 14 inch model is 0.8 inches thick and weighs 3.9 pounds.

There’s no word on the $1100 13.3 inch Series 5 ultrabook which is expected to have a 128GB solid state disk instead of a 500GB hard drive.
This strikes me as a good compromise between a light laptop and ultrabook…16 GB of solid state cache for fast boots, and the 500 GB hard drive for storing lots of data and keeping cost down. Â I don’t care if it weighs a few more ounces than an ultrabook with only a solid state drive. Â I think Acer has an ultrabook in this category also.
