The Samsung Series 5 Chromebook is a notebook with a 12.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 dual core processor, 2GB of RAM and a 16GB solid state disk. Oh yeah, and it runs Google Chrome OS — a fast-booting operating system designed around the Chrome web browser.

When Samsung introduced the Series 5 Chromebook last year it had a starting price of $430. Now you can pick one up from Amazon for $299.99.

This is the second price drop for the laptop. In November the price fell to $350.

The Acer AC700 Chromebook is available for the same $300 price, but that price has remained steady for the last half year or so. Acer’s Chromebook also features a slightly smaller 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display.

Earlier this year Samsung started showing off a next-generation Chromebook with a faster processor. Sony is also apparently working on a Chromebook.

It’s likely that the price cut for the Series 5 Chromebook is an indication that new models could hit the streets soon.

But unless you really need a cheap device for web browsing today, you might want to hold out for those new models.

While you might not think it takes a high-speed processor to power a web browser, first generation Chromebooks have a tendency to feel sluggish once you start opening more than a few browser tabs at a time.

  1. well, thing is … modern web browsing has became THE cross-media application full of animation, sound & video content, active at the same time. this means need for system resources as well as processor power. the times of simple html text browsing are long gone. time to change this paradigm everywhere. there ain’t no places anymore for weak machines simply meant for web access.
