Right on schedule the first Chromebook has gone on sale. You can now order the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook from Amazon. There’s just one catch: The only model in stock at the moment is the 3G model with a white lid which runs $499.99
. If you want the WiFi-only version for $429.99
all you can do at the moment is place a pre-order. Update: Best Buy has the WiFi model in stock.
Other Chromebook models
including the “Titan Silver” versions of the Series 5 and the Acer Cromia Chromebook are likewise up for pre-order but not yet available.
The Samsung Series 5 features a 12.1 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 dual core processor, 2GB of DDR3 memory and a 16GB solid state drive. Overall it’s a decent piece of hardware, but it feels hampered by the limited software. You can find more details in my review of the Series 5 Chromebook.
