Samsung NC20 laptop with 12.1 inch display
Samsung NC20 laptop with 12.1 inch display

Samsung already makes netbooks and mini-laptops with 10.1″, 10.2″ and 12.1″ screens. Now it looks like the company could be working on an 11.6 incher. DigiTimes reports that Samsung and Dell have both placed orders for a new 11.6 inch screen from LCD panel maker Chunghwa Picture Tubes.

We’ve already seen evidence that Dell is building a machine with an 11.6 inch display, but this is the first I’ve heard of a Samsung model with that screen size. The screen would have a display resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, and it’s designed to play well with Intel’s CULV processor line, so there’s a decent chance we’re not talking about an Intel Atom based machine here. Samsung Product Marketing Director Todd Bouman did say at a recent event that the company was looking at the CULV platform.

  1. I own a NC20 and I love it, but I really think it doesn’t fit perfectly into the netbook-scheme. A little bit smaller (11.6″) would be nice! Samsung, offer your Netbooks with preinstalled Linux: It works! (If you or VIA would spend a little bit money and time for 3d/video accereleration support for the VX800-chipset…

  2. It was bound to happen! Netbooks and Laptops are merging as categories, and soon, other than the very high-end of the laptop market, everything else will be built around low-cost processors. That’s the only stuff that appears to sells.

I just read an excellent analysis of the evolution of the netbook category, on the VDIworks blog https://vdiworks.com/wp/?p=62 This was written by their CEO, Amir Husain. I agree with a lot of the things he has to say about this. I will post a link to this liliputing article on his blog because this reinforces the point he was making…

  3. I have been saying all along 11″ devices could be a sweet spot for many consumers who want enough screen to see, yet a portable design that would fit in a small bag. Some here might disagree, but I think the average soccer-mom wants something a tiny bit bigger then the 10″ models with their cramped keyboards. A slick svelte 11″ machine will be a winner mark my words.

Is it too much to hope for ION? Yes, I getting Samsung and 11″….asking for more is too much.
