A few weeks ago, Amazon started taking orders for a new Special Edition version of the Samsung NC10 mini-laptop. It has a higher capacity, 5900mAh battery than the original NC10. And it has a slightly larger touchpad.
Now, early on it looked like the Special Edition had a radically redesigned touchpad with a new chrome mouse button and no visible scroll area. But a closer look at the pictures on Amazon shows that the new touchpad really looks lot like the old one — it just has a little more surface area. Don’t get me wrong. That’s certainly a good thing. But I’d say the primary reason to check out the Samsung NC10 special edition is for that battery, which Samsung says could run for over 9 hours on a single charge.

I always wish that manufacturers would give various estimates for battery life, so for example, when doing A it lasts 3 hrs, when doing A+B it lasts 1 hr etc.
Do ANY netbooks have a third mouse button?
By the way, you can do a middle click traditionally by pressing both the left and right mouse button simultaneously, but I don’t know if this is possible on NC10’s rocker design (where you can only press one button at a time)
Not netbooks per-se, but ThinkPads have 3rd button.
The one that comes closest to a netbook, x61s, could be had before Christmas for ~CAD570 (even cheaper in US) in basic config (1.6 c2dulv, 1gb ram, 80 gb hd, abg wifi, 12″ screen, 4cell~ 3h battery, ~ 2.9 pounds).
With mini laptops that support multitouch (like the NC10), you can configure a three finger click to act as a third button. Or use tap zones in the corners of the trackpad.
I found that under windows I can configure the touchpad so that I don’t use the buttons at all. I don’t know any linux distro that supports multitouch yet, but there’s a new synaptics driver so give it a month or two…
(btw opensuse seems the best linux distro for the NC10 as all the fn keys work, touchpad sensitivity is just right and sound works correctly).

It’s still not a 3-button touchpad, which makes using Linux annoying.
A bigger touchpad is certainly a good thing, personally I think it’s a little too small in the original NC10.
The Special Edition is only $50 more than the standard NC10 and you get a great battery.
When will Amazon ship?
