You know that Samsung NC10 the folks at Laptop Magazine ordered from Korea and unboxed the other day? Yeah, they got around to posting a full review, and all I can say is wow. Just wow.

For starters, as expected, the NC10 has one of the best keyboards seen on any netbook. I mean, the keyboard layout is pretty much the same as the keyboard on the Acer Aspire One. But the Samsung NC10 has a larger screen which means a larger chassis, which means a larger keyboard, which is a good thing. The right shift key is full sized, and positioned squarely below the enter key. And while the touchpad is a bit smaller than those on some other netbooks, it supports multi-touch and has a scrolling section on the right side.

But here’s the kicker. The Samsung NC10 comes with a 6 cell battery that lasted a whopping 7 and a half hours in Laptop Magazine’s battery test. That’s more than two hours longeer than the MSI Wind and about three hours longer than the Asus Eee PC 1000H.

It’s not exactly clear why this netbook gets such amazing battery life. It has the same 1.6GHz CPU as the other netbooks, and the same 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display. And it weighs just 2.8 pounds, so while it’s certainly possible that the battery packs a bit more punch than the 6 cell batteries that come with some other netbooks, it’s certainly not a behemoth that doubles the weight of the laptop.

The Samsung NC10 is expected to hit the US any day now for $499 or less. You can read more about the NC10 in the Liliputing Product Database.

Update: The folks at Laptop were as surprised as I was at the 7.5 hour battery run time, so they re-ran the test. This time they kept the screen brightness at 100% (the first time it was at 50%). The battery ran out of juice after 4 hours and 48 minutes. Still not bad, but slightly less incredible. They’re running the test one more time today, with the brightness set to 50% again to see if they can reproduce the initial results.

Update 2: After running the battery tests again with the screen at 50% and Samsung’s battery extending software disabled, Laptop managed to get about 6 and a half hours out of the battery.

  1. Still no word about the temperature… 🙁 I hope it’s cold and quiet…

  2. Laptop Magazine reran the battery test and got 4:48 with the brightness set to full. They have updated the review.

    1. Indeed, I got seven and a half hours out of an aspire one with a 6-cell battery. But I was being really really frugal.

Even so, it’s a useful battery life now, which the original kinda lacked. But it is a bit of a carbuncle. If the samsung takes a 6-cell with more grace it’s a good thing
