Samsung’s latest smartwatch has a circular watch face and a unique control system: you control the watch by rotating the bezel or by pressing home or back buttons on the side of the watch.

The press release is curiously silent on the question of whether the watch also has a touchscreen. Update: it does.

The Samsung Gear S2 features a Tizen-based operating system and it will be available in several different configurations.

First up, there’s the Gear S2, which has a simpler (and probably cheaper) design. It’ll be available in a dark gray case with a dark gray band or a silver case with a white band.

Next, there’s the Gear S2 classic, which features a more stylish looking black case and a leather strap.

Finally, there’s an optional Gear S2 with 3G. This model has an e-SIM and support for mobile data and voice capabilities: you can use the watch with or without a phone.

Each model features a 1.2 inch, 360 x 360 pixel Super AMOLED display, a 1 GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.1, and NFC for mobile payments.

The 3G model features a 300 mAh battery that should provide up to 2 days of run time, while the models without 3G feature 250 mAh batteries that Samsung says should provide 2 to 3 days of battery life.

There are also some size differences between the three models:

  • Gear S2 Classic: 49.8mm x 42.3mm x 11.4mm and 47 grams (1.7 ounces)
  • Gear S2: 43.6mm x 39.9mm x 11.4mm and 42 grams (1.5 ounces)
  • Gear S2 with 3G: 41.8mm x 44mm a 13.4mm and 51 grams (1.8 ounces)

All three models have IP68 dust and water-resistant cases, heart rate sensors, ambient light sensors, and motion sensors for fitness tracking.

Samsung hasn’t announced how much the Gear S2 will cost or when it will be available for purchase. But the company will show off the new watch at the IFA show in Berlin this week.

  1. This is a nice looking sports watch. If only they had this in a classy style like the moto 360 and with WM10 support!

    1. At least they don’t have the “Classy” Moto “Flat-Tire” look. (Well, someone had to say it!)

  2. No price? Samsung should launch a cheap version of their smart watch, cmon Samsung, get with the program!
