As expected, a WiFi-only version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is now available in the US for about $350. The tablet has the same 1 GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor and 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display as the 3G model which has been available since last year. But the WiFi version has just 16GB of storage and a lower price tag — especially since you don’t have to sign up for a long term 3G service contract.

The tablet runs Google Android 2.2 with Samsung’s Touchwiz software on top, as well as the Swype virtual keyboard.

TigerDirect is selling the Galaxy Tab for $349.99 with same-day shipping. It’s also available from pre-order from Amazon for the same price, but I suspect the “pre” will disappear from that product page soon.

Of course, if you’re looking for a 3G tablet and don’t mind signing up for a 2 year service plan, most wireless carriers are selling the tablet for even less than $350.

  1. I think the biggest competition will be a B&N nook. I suspect only the technically sophisticated are likely to find the WiFi Galaxy Tab, but they’re the most likely to know that the nook is almost as capable and much cheaper. Moreover, local TV news showed how to root the nook and talked about it as an inexpensive iPad-like device so even non-technical users know about it.
