As expected, Samsung has a rugged version of its latest flagship phone. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active shares many of the features of the more sedentary Galaxy S6. But it has a tougher case design, a bigger battery, and an IP68 water and dust resistance design.

AT&T will sell the new phone starting June 12t

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active features a 5.1 inch. 2560 x 1440 pixel Super AMOLED display, a Samsung Exynos 742- octa-core processor, a 16MP rear camera, and 5MP front camera. It also features support for wireless charging (which requires a charger that’s sold separately from the phone).

It has a 3500 mAh battery, an Activity Zone that lets you launch apps you might need to use when hiking or camping such as a flashlight and compass, and a camouflage case… in case you need to hide the phone from bears or something.

AT&T says the phone can survive a dip in up to 3 feet of water for up to a half hour. And since it meets the MIL-SDT-810G shock resistance standard, it can also survive a fall of about 4 feet onto a flat surface.

The Galaxy S6 Active will be available for $23.17 over 30 monthly payments with the AT&T Next program, $28.96 per month over 24 months, or $34.75 over 20 payments. If you do the math, you’ll discover that means you’ll end up paying $695 for the phone.

For a limited time though, AT&T will offer users a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 when they buy a Galaxy S6 Active and sign up for a 2-year agreement, as well as the option to get a wireless charging pad for 50 percent off the list price.

  1. I presume an unlocked version will be well over $1K. Are there any worthwhile, unlocked, up-to-date GSM 5″ phones out there in the <$300 range? I considered the Idol3 and Zenfone2 but 5.5" is too big for me. The MotoG I got last fall is basically unusable now. I assume it's some combination of OS updates and apps that is the problem. My Nexus4 is on its last legs.

    1. Did you try a factory reset of the MotoG? There are several phones available in the $300 range. Usually made in China from companies you may never have heard of before. Some have received very good reviews. You can check older stories here on Liliputing or search the web.
