Plenty of people have largely replaced point-and-shoot cameras with smartphones. Many mobile phones have high quality image sensors, auto-focus capabilities, and LED flash. And more importantly, you’re more likely to have your phone on you the moment you want to snap a photo than a camera that you might have left at home.

So it’s not surprising to see phone makers emphasizing camera features on their latest handsets. HTC made a big bet on its “ultrapixel” sensor for the HTC One camera. It’s just a 4MP sensor, but it should take better shots in low light conditions.

It looks like Samsung may be taking a different approach with its next phone. SamMobile reports that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom can snap 16MP photos.

This wouldn’t be the first Android device from Samsung with a 16MP camera. That’s the same top resolution used by the Samsung Galaxy Camera. But the Galaxy S4 Zoom would be the first phone from Samsung to shoot at 16MP.

According to SamMobile, the phone will have a 4.3 inch, 960 x 540 pixel display, 8GB of storage, a microSD card slot, WiFi, Bluetooth, and A-GPS. It’ll run Android Jelly Bean and feature a dual or quad-core processor.

It seems a bit odd to give the phone the same name as the Galaxy S4 smartphone, which has a larger, higher-resolution display. But I suppose there’s time for the name to change before the Galaxy S4 Zoom hits the streets. The phone’s expected to launch early this summer.

  1. Typo. Change “It seems a bit odd to give the phone the same name as the Galaxy S4 smartphone,” to “It seems a bit odd to give the *camera* the same name as the Galaxy S4 smartphone,”.
