It looks like Samsung is preparing to offer a whole family of Android powered handheld devices that don’t make phone calls. I got a chance to check out the Samsung Galaxy Player with its 3.2 inch display and Samsung Hummingbird processor at CES. Yesterday the company unveiled its big brother, the Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 5.0, which has similar specs but a much larger 5 inch screen. Now it looks like Samsung is giving the middle child a new name.

The Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 started making the rounds last year as the Samsung YP-MB2. The device looks almost exactly like a Samsung Galaxy S phone, and has most of the same features, but it doesn’t make phone calls or connect to 3G or 4G mobile broadband networks.

The Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 has a 4 inch, 480 x 800 pixel Super Clear LCD display, a 1 GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor and runs google Android 2.2 Froyo. It has 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, FM Radio, and a has twin cameras: a VGA front-facing camera and a 3.2MP rear camera. There’s an accelerometer, digital compass, and 1200mAh battery.

The device has native support for a wide range of audio and video formats including FLAC, OGG, AAC, MP3, WMA, MPEG4, H.264, DiVX, Xvid, and WMV.

The Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 also has full access to the Google Mobile Suite which includes Google Maps, Gmail, and the Android Market.

Samsung plans to offer the Galaxy S WiFi globally in the first half of the year, starting in the UK. No word on how much it will cost.
